How do I get into my ILIAS course?

You can find detailed step-by-step instructions illustrated with screenshots and a video tutorial here: "Nutzung der Stud.IP-ILIAS-Schnittstelle" (currently only available in German).
No, you only need to use Stud.IP when accessing the course for the first time (e.g. in the beginning of the semester). This way you can enter your ILIAS course. Afterwards, you can directly log into ILIAS and find your courses. Visit https://ilias.uni-giessen.de and use your student user ID and the corresponding password to log in. Then you click on “My ILIAS” in the navigation bar and select “Courses and Groups”. Here you can find all of your courses and groups. You get access to the course contents by clicking on the course’s name.

How can I find out about news in my ILIAS courses?

First option: You log into ILIAS with your student user ID and the corresponding password via https://ilias.uni-giessen.de. Then you will be automatically directed to the page “My ILIAS” > “Overview”. If you have accessed your ILIAS course via Stud.IP once, you can click on “My ILIAS” in the navigation bar and select “Overview”. On the left side you will find the “News” section. All updates on your courses, e.g., new files or exercises, show up there. They also link to the corresponding course so that you can easily access the new objects.
Second option: Under “My ILIAS” in the navigation bar, you can select “News”. Here, you can select individual courses (via “Filter”) or view information on all your courses at once. You can also select the recency of the news (from a few days to several weeks). In your list of results, you can then find e.g. the latest download files.
The news feature only works under the premise that your lecturer has activated it. In case you notice that news on your course do not appear in the respective section, kindly ask your lecturer to do so. Lecturers find the option in the course settings under “Additional Features”. The same is true for groups.
Yes, for ILIAS objects like forums, wikis and blogs you can activate notifications yourself by clicking on “Actions” (next to the bell symbol) in the upper right corner of the forum, wiki or blog. After activating this feature, you will receive notifications on new entries via email. You can find all emails you received via ILIAS in the section “My ILIAS” > “Mail”.

Notifications are available for the following ILIAS objects:
  • Course
  • Group
  • Reservations
  • Forum
    • Notifications on single topics
    • Notifications on the whole forum
    • Notifications on direct answers on your posts (can be activated for specific posts)
  • Wiki
    • Notifications on single pages
    • Notifications on the whole wiki
  • Blog
  • Data collections (must be activated by the lecturer: Setting > Notifications)

How can I get in touch with lecturers and my fellow students and communicate with them?

IILIAS offers a mailing feature: You can send emails to other members of the course (or any other person) directly from ILIAS. The email automatically contains the link to the course from which you sent the email. In order to use this feature, go to your course and select “Members” > “Mail to Members”.
Please check if you have addressed the right person.
The address “ilias@uni-giessen.de” is the central ILIAS support’s contact.  Do not use it in your emails to staff and peers. They will not receive them.
Alternatively you can sent emails via “My ILIAS” > “Mail”. Here you can search for individual recipients and send messages directly to them.
Notifications regarding received emails are indicated by a red marker on the letter symbol.
By default, emails will be forwarded to your university email address. If this is not the case, you can activate this function yourself in the settings. In the navigation bar in the upper right corner of the screen, you can click on your profile and select “Settings”. There you can find “Mail Settings”. Here you can select whether or not emails should be forwarded to you university mail inbox.
