Research questions: finding, formulating, revising

Academic vs. scientific questions (1/2)

When we say scientific writing, we usually  mean the journal articles, book chapters, and monographs that professors, researchers, and academic professionals publish as their professional research output.

In contrast, when we say academic writing, we usually mean the essays, summaries, term papers, and theses that students write for their courses and as the final step in their degree programs.

Academic writing is also used to refer to professional publications by professors and researchers. However, scientific writing is never used to refer to student writing.

In scientific writing, the objective is to find general principles that can be identified, reproduced, and applied in contexts other than the context of one single study or research project.

In academic writing, students complete small, feasible projects in order to show that they can find and explain relevant literature, find or create datasets, and discuss their observations in the datasets in light of the relevant literature.
