Learning Strategies

What are the benefits of structuring and visualisation?

As in the case of the activation of pre-existing knowledge, structuring and visualisation are basic strategies that can make learning easier in a variety of ways. A large number of methods are available, with the following examples selected for presentation in this module:

Structuring & Visualisation - How and why

All methods of structuring and visualisation essentially pursue the same objectives:
  1. The streamlining of learning content down to the most important aspects, thus lending greater clarity to an otherwise potentially overwhelming amount of information.
  2. The selection of headings and structures that serve as retrieval cues.
This approach makes it easier to identify interconnectivities, overlaps and differences between concepts.

It also offers another benefit: During the arrangement, structuring and visualisation of the learning content the learner simultaneously “pre-learns” and enhances their depth of processing. This supports the expansion of the semantic network in their brain and ensures that potential problems are identified – and dealt with – at the earliest possible stage.
