Theoretical background to setting priorities

In order to manage your own time confidently, it is important to set priorities. Time constraints can arise for very different reasons.
Perhaps you have a time-consuming part-time job, or you have children to look after. In this chapter, we would like to introduce you to a strategy that can help you set priorities in order to make the most of your limited time.
However, time constraints can also arise if the material to be learned is very extensive – or, sometimes, if you yourself have very high expectations or perhaps tend towards perfectionism. The following procedure can be helpful for you in such situations as well.

In this chapter, we will introduce you to a strategy that will help you set priorities: the Eisenhower Principle.

The Eisenhower principle can help you prioritise learning tasks for a learning phase as well as your general everyday tasks. The latter can be especially helpful if you tend to spend too much time on everyday tasks and don't find enough time to study.

Or perhaps you’re like SusiStress:

“When I'm in an exam period, I always feel that all tasks are equally important. When I look through my study materials, everything – really everything! – seems to me to be absolutely important for passing the exam.
This then causes me to try to memorise everything like a madwoman.
As soon as I skip a chapter due to time constraints shortly before the exam, I have a little monster on my shoulder all the time, roaring at the top of its voice: THIS WILL DEFINITELY BE PART OF THE EXAM! YOU'RE BOUND TO FAIL.
In the current situation, in which I am sitting in front of my laptop at home, all alone with my lecture notes, I find it even harder to distinguish important things from unimportant ones.”

Many people feel the same way as SusiStress during labour-intensive phases.
However, a closer look often reveals that not everything is equally urgent and important.

We now want to take a close look at the tasks you have to do and first introduce you to the Eisenhower Principle step by step.
