Selecting and designing your optimal workplace

The first considerations for making the most of your self-organised studying at home should relate to the choice and design of your workplace.

Sofa? Desk? Kitchen table? Or bed?

Even if sofa or bed seem quite cosy, studying there is not very recommendable from a learning psychology point of view. Thus, it is better to reserve these two places for leisure and to relax and sleep.

Have you already had a good experience with one particular place of learning?

If you have studied successfully at home for past exams, you may be able to use the same place of learning again.

Do you usually study in the library?
Then think about which place at home is good for you to work in a concentrated way and with as little disruption as possible. You might also have to do a bit of rearranging to create a new place of learning.
Especially if you live in a one-room flat and study, eat and sleep in the same room, it is helpful to have a sensible structure. For example, after finishing your work for the university, you can put away all your study materials in order to have a clearer transition to free time.
