Paraphrasing in English

Four steps to find the right expression

So here is what you have to do if you want to find the right expression for your paraphrase, even if you only know the word in German.

Step 1

Look up the English translation for your expression in a German-English dictionary. As you possibly have not been educated in English, you might nt be able to decide if it's the right or wrong translation you have found.

Step 2

Next, what you will have to do is to counter-check it against an English-English dictionary: OALD, Merriam-Websters and similar.

Step 3

Then, as a noun usually only has a small number of verbs to go with it (which ones is usually known to native speakers but not to non-natives) check the collocations of the word in www.ozdic.com. Collocations are also stated in the better dictionaries.

Step 4

Finally, having checked your phrase against OALD and OZDIC, you might like to know if your collocation is the most natural and common collocation used in English. So you check how often it has been used in the internet by English or American websites in your field. For this you can simply use a search engine to find your phrase and see how often it can find it. If you only find a few sites and they are mostly non-native ones, be careful. Better play it safe and try to find a more common phrase.
