Essay Writing and Advanced Punctuation in English

Tom does a brainstorming

Hi, it’s me again, Tom. I’m studying here at Giessen University. Today I am sitting for a five-paragraph examination essay in one of the English courses at the university. The question I have opted for is whether it is acceptable to kill animals for food. I have chosen this question because I like animals. I always choose questions that relate to me personally because they motivate me more strongly and provide me with will power to finish my essay. First I usually try and come up with some ideas of my own so that the quotes given to us by our instructor do not influence me right from the start. For this purpose, I will do a simple brainstorming. I ask myself, as if I was another person, the question of the essay: Hey, Tom. Do you think we should we kill animals for food? This is what came to my mind:

  • Animals kill and eat meat. It’s natural.
  • Animals are not human beings. They can not think or feel the way we do.
  • Do as you would be done to: You wouldn't like to be killed, Tom. You wouldn't like to be eaten.
  • Animals can feel pain like you, so we should not cause them any pain.
  • Animals also want to live a long and happy life, so we should not kill them.
  • Animals are often mass-bred and kept under terrible circumstances.
  • Genetically, some animals are not very different from us. We are genetically more similar to monkeys or pigs than to spiders and shrimps.
  • We do not have to eat meat from animals. We could eat the vegetables and corns ourselves.
