Using BigBlueButton

Moderation and Interaction in the BigBlueButton environment

Raising your hand via the Status Display
Participants in an online seminar can show their hands as well, for example to raise a question. You can set a status by clicking your own icon in the participants list. To raise your hand, click the hand symbol. To change your status or set it back to the default, click the icon again.

Interactivity through polls
If you have been granted the presenter status, you can use the "Action" button on the bottom left of your screen to start polls.

Click “Start a poll” to conduct either pre-defined or self-created polls in a session. Use the button 'publish polling results' to display the results visibly for all participants in the web conference. Please note: The display of the polling results is only visible if the whiteboard is shown and visible during the session.

Drawing and making markings on the multi-user whiteboard

To collaboratively draw and leave markings on the uploaded presentation, a multi-user whiteboard can be enabled.

Click the Whiteboard-Symbol on the right side of your screen and enable the multi-user whiteboard. All participants in the room are now able to draw and write freely on the portrayed presentation.

If you do not want to work collaboratively, you can still use this feature individually by granting yourself the status of the presenter.

Tip: Add plain white slides to your presentation to use this feature on a blank page.

Saving whiteboard annotations
There is no function available to save the annotations made on the Whiteboard. Instead, take screenshots of your Whiteboard.

Using breakout rooms for group work
You can create any number of small rooms and assign your group to these rooms either randomly or manually by clicking on the gear wheel symbol. For the participants, a new room will appear in a new tab. Alternatively, you can configure the settings so that the participants can select a room to join themselves.

Inform your group that the new room will not automatically return to the main room and that they will have to click the main room’s tab. It is advisable to set the duration of the room generously. Breakout rooms can be ended by moderators at any time.

Muting web browser tabs while using multiple breakout rooms
A useful tip to gain an overview and jump through multiple breakout rooms rapidly is to open all breakout rooms in your web browser tabs simultaneously and muting the rooms that you are not actively engaging in. To mute individual tabs, you have to right-click the corresponding tab and choose “Mute Site”. To unmute tabs, right-click on the tab and choose “Unmute Site”.

Creating a consultation session using BBB
A queue in BBB can be created by selecting “Require moderator approval before joining” in the options menu on your dashboard. This allows you to let waiting participants enter the BBB room individually.

After opening the room, you would see the usual interface. When people try to enter the room, a pop-up message appears in the upper right corner. A “Please wait for a moderator to approve you joining the meeting” message appears when they try to join the meeting from the guests' perspective. The number of “Waiting Users” is displayed on the left side of the User Management.

A numbered list of pending users will be displayed in a menu by clicking on the “Waiting Users” button. All guests can be allowed or denied individually here. In the upper part of the menu, all guests can be allowed or denied at once.

You can allow someone to join by clicking “Accept” on the right side of their name in the expanded menu. In this way, you can allow multiple people one after the other or, for example, allow groups to enter the room at the same time.
