1. Dialogue and dialogue categories
Rhetorical argumentation is based on dialogue, an essential aspect of our social life. Dialogues range from small talk (contact dialogue) to theme discussions (debates), varying in their predictability and formal structures (see graphic 1). To gain an overview, graphics 2 to 4 depict the distinct types of dialogues (Geissner 2001):
