English: Using connectors correctly

Connectors used to show results and consequences (1/5)

accordingly

The adverb accordingly means that something is appropriate to particular circumstances:
  • Care workers play a crucial role in our ageing society and should be paid accordingly.
It can also be used as a sentence adverb, i.e., connector, and as such describes something that was or will be done or happen as a result of something else. It can be used in different positions in the sentence, depending on the overall sentence structure:
  • In the first round of experiments, the dose administered proved to be inefficient. Accordingly, we raised it in the following round.
  • They were in clear breach of the rules; accordingly, there will be disciplinary action required.
  • The suspect will remain in custody while we continue with our inquiries, and, accordingly, we cannot comment on this issue any further.
NB: Be careful not to confuse accordingly with according to. The latter phrase is used to express what somebody else (a person, a newspaper, etc.) thinks or says:
  • According to The Independent, Cameron will not appear in televised live debates before the election.
  • According to Tom, his girlfriend is brilliant. I think she is not very nice. (We do not say: according to me)
