Creating posters to present scientific data

Checklist

Here is a checklist that you can print out and work your way through.
Check off all the points or if something is missing or isn’t right, you can correct it.

  • Look at your poster from a distance (on the screen). What is your overall impression? Do you like it?
    • Are all the boxes the same shape?
    • Are all boxes that are supposed to be the same size the same size?
  • Has the colour concept been implemented consistently? Have all the colours been used in the right place?
    • Are all the frames the same colour?
    • Do all the boxes have the same fill colour?
  • Read all the texts slowly and deliberately (aloud if necessary): Spelling/typing errors? Punctuation marks?
  • Are all margins the same? Are all the lines above or next to each other aligned?
    • Equal spacing between usable area and page margins?
    • Equal spacing between the boxes?
    • Equal spacing between texts and boxes and figures?
  • Are all the poster parts and boxes filled?
    • Header: Title, authors, addresses, logos
    • Body: Introduction, main section, summary
    • Footer: References
  • Are all the boxes aligned?
    • Are all the images in the boxes aligned the same way?
    • Are all the boxes numbered?
    • Are all the figures numbered?
    • Are all the parts of the illustration fully labelled and numbered in the same size?
    • Are all the captions of all the figures in the same language?
    • Do all the figures have a legend or key?
    • Do the figures match the contents of the legends or keys?
  • Did you hide/erase all the guide areas and any visible guides?
  • Fonts
    • Is the headline big enough but not too big?
    • Is the smallest font still legible at a distance of 3 m?
    • Is the title formatted as a heading?
    • Are all the chapter headings formatted as such?
    • Are all the continuous texts formatted as such?
    • Are all the lists/enumerations formatted?
    • Are all the legends/keys formatted as legends/keys?
    • Are all the necessary terms formatted in bold (highlights) or italics (species)?
    • Do all the references have the same formatting?
