Learning objectives: | The module "Using connectors correctly" will help you to improve cohesion in your academic writing by using connectors. Connectors are words or short phrases (e.g., conjunctions, adverbs, and prepositions) which can be used to guide readers through a text by creating cohesion and coherence and which link sentences, paragraphs and even whole text passages both forwards and backwards. Used correctly, connectors will make your texts readable and easy to follow, as well as stylistically appealing. The challenge, however, lies not only in choosing the right connectors, but also in deciding on the right number of connectors and using them in the right position in the sentence. The module will introduce you to the most important connectors, clarify their meaning and provide examples of how to use connectors to good effect. You will also have plenty of opportunities to test your knowledge in short quizzes and a final test. When you have completed all sections of the module, which will take about two hours, you will have gained a thorough understanding of connectors and their use in academic English. |
